Temporary medical insurance, as the name implies, provides you with medical coverage for a limited period of time (up to 6 months, or even 12 months in some cases).
Temporary medical insurance however is not intended to provide you comprehensive coverage.
It protects you from unforeseen accidents or illness, but does not cover preventive care, well-baby care, physicals or routine doctor visits. It does not cover pre-existing conditions as well.
Some employers set a waiting period (anywhere from 1 - 12 months) before a new employee becomes eligible for health insurance. If your employer is one of them, it's time to look into temporary health insurance.
It is easy to get temporary insurance. Your coverage starts immediately, typically the next day after you have applied. It offers lower premiums than permanent health insurance plans. With temporary insurance plans, you can visit the doctor or hospital of your choice.
If you think you will need coverage for a longer period of time than 12 months, or if you have preexisting conditions, consider the other health insurance options.
